The annual initiative “Games with the Scent… of a Woman” is addressed to female learners from the Second Chance Schools (SCS) of the Regional Units of Rodopi and Xanthi, as well as their branches (SCS of Komotini, Iasmos, Sapes, Fillyra–Arriana, Organi, Xanthi, Myki, and Kentavros).
The aim of the initiative is to make the premises of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science (DPESS) a meeting place where participants can get to know one another, communicate, receive information on issues that concern them, interact, and enjoy themselves in a safe sporting environment, free from discrimination and exclusion based on abilities or other characteristics (social, cultural, etc.).
The programme consists of activity stations including ice-breaking games, cooperative games, empathy-building activities, trust-building games, team sports, activities introducing participants to physical exercise, both popular and lesser-known sports, and group dance. The groups are mixed and are formed through random assignment of female learners from different Second Chance Schools.
The initiative is implemented with the support of volunteer undergraduate and postgraduate students of the DPESS at the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), under the supervision of Associate Professor Olga Kouli and Instructor Eleftheria Morela. It is co-organized by the Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee of DUTH, with the support of the Democritus University of Thrace, EMERGE DUTH, Europe Direct DUTH, the Hellenic Red Cross, and the Rodopi Association of Cancer Patients and Friends “Strength of Soul”, and is sponsored by organizations and businesses from the local community.
